The warm and inviting Congregation Beth Shalom Library features more than 3,500 items, in the categories of Adult Fiction, Adult Non-fiction, Reference, Young Adult Fiction and Non-fiction, Children’s Works, and Media items.
Books in the Reference and Adult Sections cover topics such as observance and practice, Israel, spirituality, history, and Jewish life around the world. They are organized by the Classification System For Libraries of Judaica, similar to the Dewey Decimal System. The complete 72-volume set of the Schorrenstein Edition Talmud Bavli is included in the Library’s collection of holy works. Cookbooks featuring delicious recipes from various Jewish traditions and Jewish music books are highlighted in their own sections on bookshelves near the windows. Tables and chairs enable Library users to use items in the room, although all items except Reference works may be checked out by members for use at home.
The Children’s Corner has a play rug and floor pillows in front of the extensive collection of books, suitable for young readers. These can all be checked out for hours of good reading at home. The selection of holiday books is especially large and books are geared for children of all ages. Books for Young Adults have their own easily-identified section on a bookcase adjacent to those for younger readers.
The growing selection of Media items includes CDs, DVDs, and videotapes and is currently located on top of the card catalogue. Media items may also be checked out by members for home use.
The CBS Library is open whenever the building is open and member check-out is a simple, do-it-yourself process. Contributions of volunteer time, books and media items, and funding are always welcome.
